Everything you need to know about pressure control

Maybe it is a word that you have heard before, but you actually don’t know what the meaning of it is. In this case: pressure control. What is it? What does it do? How does it work? And there might be a chance that it will be useful in the future. 


PC, short for pressure control, is a mode of some sort of mechanical ventilation alone and a variable within other modes of mechanical ventilation. Pressure control is used to regulate pressures applied during mechanical ventilation. For example Air that is delivered into the patients lungs are currently regulated by Volume Control or Pressure Control. In pressure controlled breaths a tidal volume achieved is based on how much volume can be delivered before the pressure control reaches its limit. 


You can use pressure regulators. These reduce a supply (or inlet) pressure to a lower outlet pressure and work to maintain this outlet pressure despite maybe fluctuations in the inlet pressure. The reduction of the inlet pressure to a lower outlet pressure is the absolute key characteristic of these pressure regulators.You need to keep a few things in mind when you want to buy one. Important stuff to think about: operating pressure ranges for the inlet and outlet, flow requirements, the fluid (Is it maybe a gas, some sort of liquid, toxic, or flammable?), expected operating temperature range, material selection for the regulator components including seals, as well as size and weight constraints. 


You have already read about volume control as well, but what is the difference between that and pressure control? If you really think about it, it is not actually that difficult. The main difference between these two types of ventilation is that in volume control, you obviously set the volume, but in pressure control, you do not directly set the volume. Instead, in pressure control you set the pressure.
